Honda commissions next-gen S2000 design from students

Stuart discovered this gem in Honda’s display at the L.A. show. In cooperation with the Art Center College of Design and the College for Creative Studies, Honda commissioned students from both institutions to design a next-gen S2000 concept. They were instructed that the target demographic was a male buyer of any age in the year 2012.
Not only did the students each come up with a 3D model (pics after the jump), they also researched realistic manufacturing techniques, market research, benchmarking and package development. This holistic approach no doubt was a great learning experience for the students, as well as a treat for us who may be staring at the inspiration for the next S2000.

"1. uggg.... The only decent looking one is the last one."
And even then...
Please tell me there are design students out there who can do better than this.

autoblog's "upgrade" seems like most corporate upgrades. it took a long time for the option to actually post to appear beneath the already posted comments. any way, the 1st and 4th ( f/b ) pictures show a really nice possibility for the next S2000. to whoever designed this one -the back could be tamed a bit. except for that, this is a really nice design!

Obviously the 1st and the last models r much more likely to steal the hearts of young men in 2012.. the rest just look like moulded scrap

As the owner of an '05 S2000, I would hope that Honda would opt for a "cleaner" look not the "chiseld", thrown together blocks seen here. Look at what Lamborghini has done with the Miura concept.

The first one is obviously the most well though out and sophisticated out of all of the four. The design is sleek and the whole car has a nice stance. The last one seems interesting and has potential.

Keep the current design and replace the cheapo Casio digital watch inspired instrument cluster with something more Mazda/Porsche/Mercedes/Aston/Jaguar/Farrari/BMW/Audi/Rolex/TAG-Heuer inspired.

As a proud honda enthusiasts and owner of a 2000 S2000 Roadster these new designs mock the originial and are disgraceful to honda engineers who designed the current sleek frame. These concepts look like chrysler crossfires/prowlers and are ughly!! Honda please keep the current 00-06 design or come out with something better than the ones above!

If these are any indications of future designs for the S2000, I am just going to keep my 2002 S2000 forever. Honda, make it high-tech like the current one, not "retro" like all the US automakers. I thnk "retro" is for old people who miss cars offered in their time, it may not necessarily attract younger buyers.

From an industrial design student's prospective, some of them are quite inspiring. Others, I must agree, look like scrap. Perhaps If I became one of their designers you could count on me to come up with a sporty design.

Agree. Most of these are nothing spectacular. Last one is decent but looks more audi-esque. Gotta realize that these concepts are supposed to be edgey and be more controversial than not. Only nice one is the first. Only one on here that really keeps the design cues of the current S2000, and does it well I might add. As a current S2000 owner, I'd buy it.
